Amazon’s referral fee cliffs: the prices that earn less than a cheaper one
In four Amazon categories the referral fee rate is set by the whole sale price, not by the part above a threshold. One cent over the line raises the fee on every dollar. We worked out exactly where that leaves you worse off than the cheaper price.
Key numbers
- $1.39less in your pocket when a clothing item goes from $20.00 to $20.01 (referral fee $2.00 → $3.40).
- $20.01–$21.68clothing prices that net less than $20.00. You need $21.69 to beat it.
- 5 dead zonesacross Clothing, Beauty & Personal Care, Baby and Grocery. In every other category the rate is flat, falls as the price rises, or applies only to the part above the line, so a higher price never earns less.
- $17.42what a $20.99 shirt nets after the referral fee, $0.58 less than the same shirt at $20.00.
Every Amazon price band that earns less than a lower price
Net here is the sale price minus Amazon’s referral fee. Your product, FBA and shipping costs are the same on both sides of the line, so the difference is entirely the fee.
| Category | Rate change | Fee at the line | Fee one cent over | Lost at the line | Avoid these prices | First price that earns more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clothing and Accessories | 5% → 10% above $15.00 | $0.75 | $1.50 | $0.74 | $15.01–$15.83 | $15.84 |
| Clothing and Accessories | 10% → 17% above $20.00 | $2.00 | $3.40 | $1.39 | $20.01–$21.68 | $21.69 |
| Beauty, Health, and Personal Care | 8% → 15% above $10.00 | $0.80 | $1.50 | $0.69 | $10.01–$10.82 | $10.83 |
| Baby Products | 8% → 15% above $10.00 | $0.80 | $1.50 | $0.69 | $10.01–$10.82 | $10.83 |
| Grocery and Gourmet | 8% → 15% above $15.00 | $1.20 | $2.25 | $1.04 | $15.01–$16.23 | $16.24 |
Rates from Amazon’s referral fee table: “5% for products with a total sales price of $15.00 or less”, then 10% up to $20.00 and 17% above $20.00 for Clothing and Accessories. Beauty, Health and Personal Care and Baby Products: 8% up to $10.00, 15% above. Grocery and Gourmet: 8% up to $15.00, 15% above (no per-item minimum).
The prices sellers actually pick
Charm prices sit right on top of these lines. Here is what the usual candidates net in clothing, where the 17% band starts at $20.00:
| Item price | Referral rate | Referral fee | Net of fee | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $14.99 | 5.0% | $0.75 | $14.24 | OK |
| $15.00 | 5.0% | $0.75 | $14.25 | OK |
| $15.49 | 10.0% | $1.55 | $13.94 | Earns $0.31 less than $15.00 |
| $15.99 | 10.0% | $1.60 | $14.39 | OK |
| $19.99 | 10.0% | $2.00 | $17.99 | OK |
| $20.00 | 10.0% | $2.00 | $18.00 | OK |
| $20.99 | 17.0% | $3.57 | $17.42 | Earns $0.58 less than $20.00 |
| $21.49 | 17.0% | $3.65 | $17.84 | Earns $0.16 less than $20.00 |
| $21.99 | 17.0% | $3.74 | $18.25 | OK |

$19.99 and $20.00 are fine. $20.99 is the trap: it looks like a modest step up and it pays you less than $20.00. If the item can carry a price above $20, it needs to be at least $21.69 before the higher price is worth anything, and at $21.99 you keep only $0.25 more than at $20.00 for a $1.99 higher shelf price.
| Item price | Referral rate | Referral fee | Net of fee | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $14.99 | 8.0% | $1.20 | $13.79 | OK |
| $15.00 | 8.0% | $1.20 | $13.80 | OK |
| $15.49 | 15.0% | $2.32 | $13.17 | Earns $0.63 less than $15.00 |
| $15.99 | 15.0% | $2.40 | $13.59 | Earns $0.21 less than $15.00 |
| $16.49 | 15.0% | $2.47 | $14.02 | OK |
In grocery everything from $15.01 to $16.23 nets less than $15.00, so $15.99 — the most natural “just over $15” price — earns $0.21 less than $15.00.
| Item price | Referral rate | Referral fee | Net of fee | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $9.99 | 8.0% | $0.80 | $9.19 | OK |
| $10.00 | 8.0% | $0.80 | $9.20 | OK |
| $10.49 | 15.0% | $1.57 | $8.92 | Earns $0.28 less than $10.00 |
| $10.99 | 15.0% | $1.65 | $9.34 | OK |
Shipping you charge moves the line
Amazon applies the rate to the total sales price, which its fee table defines as the list price plus shipping and any gift-wrap charge. If you fulfil orders yourself and charge shipping, the line is crossed by the total, not the item price.
Example: a merchant-fulfilled shirt at $15.99 with $4.99 shipping has a total of $20.98. That total is in the 17% band, so the referral fee is $3.57. The same shirt with free shipping at $20.98 pays the same fee — what matters is the total.
With $4.99 shipping, avoid clothing item prices from $15.02 to $16.69.
What to do with this
- Price on the line, not just over it. In these four categories $10.00, $15.00 and $20.00 are better prices than anything a few cents to a dollar above them.
- If you go over, go well over. Clothing has to clear $21.69; grocery has to clear $16.24.
- Watch promotions and coupons. A $22 item discounted to $20.50 lands in the dead zone; discounting it to $20.00 earns more than discounting it less.
- Bundles change the category maths. A two-pack priced at $19.98 stays in the 10% band; at $20.98 it pays 17% on the lot.
Not included: FBA fulfilment fees and the Professional plan’s monthly fee. Amazon says FBA fulfilment costs are “based on the product’s price, weight, and dimensions”, so if you use FBA, look up the FBA fee at both prices in Seller Central or the Revenue Calculator. If an FBA price band changes at the same line, the gap can differ from the referral-fee gap shown here.
Put your own cost, FBA fee and price into the Amazon FBA profit calculator and choose the category: it applies the same referral table, and its price ladder shows the jump at each line.
